EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DRIVIng on the left side of the road: new zealand»Čaki ouuuu ma kam morem zdej pogledat? S kje prihajajo avti? Hitro, hitro, Maja, povej mi, kam morem zavit! In zato zdaj to pišem jaz. Ker tam to ni nič kaj takega, haha. 5. 8. BREZ PANIKE Je dosti lažje, kot si predstavljaš. Ne razmišljat preveč, vzemi rent-a-car in se odpelji, kamor ti paše :D Rebeka "WAIT, where do I have to look now? Where do the cars come from? Quickly, quickly, Maja tell me, where to go! Fuck, where are the turn signals??? " Driving on the left. A third time in my life driving with an automatic transmission (all together maybe 5 minutes of driving with it). In the rain. In a country where you've never been before. In New Zealand we have rented a car, at first I was quite scared. I really didn't know, how difficult and different it will be. And in fact, it was surprisingly easy, regardless of how the first sentence of this post sounds, haha. That was only the first 15 minutes, then it was more difficult to drive back on the right side of the road and with a manual transmission, when we came back home. Before I went on my trip, I searched on the internet, about what people think, how hard it is to drive on the opposite side of the road... And that's why I'm writing this now. If you're traveling to a place where they drive on the opposite side of the road, this post will probably be useful for you. I don't know much about, what it's like to drive on the left somewhere else in the world (except in New Zealand and on Koh Phangan, Thailand), but I can tell you something about what it was like in these two destinations. 1. DRIVING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD It's good that I first drove a motorbike in Thailand and that it was there that I first drove in the opposite direction in a street, haha. Because there that's not really that big of a deal, haha. There you can just drive however you want, wherever you want... So I got a little bit used to the left side and when I came to (much) more calm roads of New Zealand, on which there are actually some rules, there were no such mistakes. . There would probably be a lot more chaos, if I did that mistake in New Zealand. It is also true that it is precisely because of this chaos and the absence of rules in Thailand roads, that it's a lot harder to drive on the left, as it is in New Zealand. 2. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION Rent-a-car companies in New Zealand are offering mostly cars with automatic transmission, which at first seemed like a problem to me, because I'm not used to it. Then I found out that it probably would not be easy to change gears with my left hand and waste my time dealing with this, when we were already dealing with driving on the left side of the road. In the end, automatic transmission really made driving on the left side a lot easier for us. 3. EMPTY ROADS I don't know if the roads are always this empty, but we came at a time when there were no crowds and there wasn't any terrible traffic anywhere. In some parts of the road, we didn't see any other cars for quite a long time, which made driving a lot easier. But I think that even if there would be more cars on the road, it still wouldn't be chaotic or too crowded on the crossroads, which can happen in Ljubljana every morning and can really drive you crazy. 4. THE ROADS ARE PRETTY GOOD, BUT YOU WON'T GO FASTER THAN 110 That's a real challenge: when the road is empty and pretty good, you don't even realize you are driving 150km/h. And the maximum speed on the (rare) roads is 110. Much more common limit is 90. And 90 on such empty road, when you have a lot of hours of driving ahead of you…uhh. Take this into account, when you're planning, how much driving you will do in one day, because you will need more time for certain amount of km, than you probably need at home. 5. THE ROADS ARE WELL MARKED, YOU DON'T NEED GPS Most of the attractions and sites are very well marked with signs. Just in case you should download the app HERE weGO, when you have wifi you should download a map of New Zealand and perhaps just in case you should search for places, which you know, you'll need and then it will work great even without the internet, when you're on the go. It's not worth spending extra money to have the GPS in the car. 6. THE GASS IS EXPENSIVE Prices vary from hour to hour, from gas station to gas station. Keep an eye on them to get the best deal. 7. YOU WILL BE USING THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS, INSTEAD OF THE TURN SIGNALS If you are anything like me, you will probably do this until the last day, because they are on the opposite sides. Old habits die hard. 8. DON'T PANIC It's a lot easier than you imagine. Don't think too much, just take the rental car and drive wherever you want :D Rebeka
