No, pa začnimo o slabih izkušnjah. Spet so me zbudili 5 min preden sem mogla začet delat, ker »so se spet nekaj zmotili glede urnikov«. Rebeka Workaway is a website, where you can find hosts, who offer you accommodation (and sometimes also food) in exchange for up to 25 hours of work per week. In most cases, you work for around 5 hours a day and then you have 2 days off, or you work more hours in one day and have more days off. At least, this is how it's suppossed to be but of course it's not always that great everywhere. That's why there are other volunteer's reviews on each of the host's profile and you should always read them, before deciding to work somewhere. It's also better to choose a host with a bigger number of reviews, because this way you can really be sure about them. If you want to know, how a bad Workaway experience looks like, keep on reading.
If you want to contact hosts on the Workaway website, you have to pay 29€ for one year. You can look for the hosts depending on the place, you want to travel to, the kind of work you would like to do, the time of your travels... Mostly, you can find work like: helping on a farm, gardening, cleaning, cooking, working in a hostel, childcare... The information about the months, in which the host is looking for volunteers, is written on their profile. Before deciding where to work, you should talk to the host about your schedule and what you get in return for work. If you have any questions, you should ask in the messages on the Workaway website, so you can avoid having a bad experience. Now, let's talk a little bit about bad experiences. I wanted to volunteer at a hostel and I found some hostels in Tallinn. One of the hostels replied and we decided about the date, on which I will come to the hostel. When I arrived there, one of the girls showed me, which beds I can choose from and that was it. In the first three days this was all they showed me. I didn't even know who is working there, who's a guest, who's a volunteer, who will tell me the work schedule... So, the first and only thing they showed me was the staff dorm, which I wish they never would have, haha :D I don't know if I ever saw a room so messy and dirty, where people sleep. You almost couldn't see the floor under everything that was laying on it. Piles of dirty laundry, leftover food, dirty plates everywhere... This room was also some kind of storage room for all the things for the hostel's bar, so there were also packages of drinks laying between all the clothes. I really had to make some effort to find some place on the floor to put my suitcase and backpack. The bunk bed, where I slept, seemed like it will fall apart any minute. The room was very humid, so I woke up every morning with wet hair and clothes and every day I was getting sicker and sicker... The first few days no one told me, when will I start working. Later, they told me I start working in a few days, but the next day they woke me up and told me I'm working in 5 minutes. The night before I kind of "had" to go to the hostel's pub crawl and tt wasn't the best experience ever working for more than 7 hours on the morning after a pub crawl, but I thought I can survive if it's only this time. With the other girl, who was working there, we made more than 50 beds that day. The next day, the same thing happened. Again, they woke me up 5 minutes before I had to work, because "they made a mistake with the schedule again" and I worked for more than 7 hours. At the same time they expected me to party and drink with guests every night. After 5 days, I realized that I can't do this and that I am getting almost nothing in return for a lot of work, so I decided to go. My experience in this hostel was very bad, but I think the bed experiences are also a part of traveling. In another post, I will tell you where I went after that to work and spent one month and a half. Rebeka
